Washing Machine Inlet Valve Replacement — Steps and Cost of Service

The inlet valve is the component that controls the flow of water into the washing machine from the household water supply. When it fails, the machine either does not fill with water at all, fills too slowly, fills continuously without stopping, or lets water in even when switched off — which can cause flooding.

Signs of a Faulty Inlet Valve

If your machine takes an unusually long time to fill, displays a water inlet error code, or you hear a continuous trickling sound even when the machine is off, the inlet valve is likely the culprit. A damaged inlet valve screen (the small mesh filter inside the valve) can also restrict water flow without causing complete valve failure.

Inlet Valve Replacement Steps

Step 1 — Confirm the Fault A technician uses a multimeter to test the solenoid coils inside the inlet valve. A reading outside the manufacturer’s specified range (typically 200–500 ohms) confirms the valve is faulty. The inlet filter screen is also checked separately, as cleaning it alone sometimes resolves the issue.

Step 2 — Source the Correct Replacement Valve Inlet valves are model-specific. The technician sources a compatible replacement using the machine’s model number. Generic valves are available in Nairobi’s appliance parts shops along Kirinyaga Road; OEM (original manufacturer) valves can be ordered from authorised service centres or imported via online platforms.

Step 3 — Power and Water Off Disconnect power and close the inlet water tap fully. Place towels under the machine before disconnecting hoses.

Step 4 — Remove the Old Valve Remove the rear access panel of the machine (or top panel, depending on the model). Disconnect the inlet hose from the valve. Unplug the electrical connectors from the valve’s solenoids. Remove the mounting screws and extract the old valve.

Step 5 — Install the New Valve Fit the new valve in the mounting bracket, reconnect the electrical connectors (noting which wire goes to which solenoid), and reattach the inlet hose securely.

Step 6 — Test Turn the water supply back on, plug in the machine, and run a full wash cycle while monitoring for leaks and confirming the machine fills and stops filling at the correct points in the cycle.
