Washing Machine Drain Hose Repair — Steps and Cost of Service

The drain hose is responsible for carrying waste water out of the machine after each wash and rinse cycle. It is a relatively simple component, but when it fails — whether through cracking, splitting, kinking, or becoming blocked — the consequences range from poor draining to water damage on your floor.

Signs of a Drain Hose Problem

Water pooling beneath the machine, a burning smell from the pump working too hard against a blockage, error codes related to drainage (such as E3 or OE on many machines), or water draining too slowly are all symptoms that point to the drain hose.

Drain Hose Repair and Replacement Steps

Step 1 — Identify the Problem The technician first determines whether the hose is kinked, split, cracked, blocked, or incorrectly positioned. A kinked hose is often simply repositioned and secured, requiring no replacement.

Step 2 — Power and Water Off Disconnect the machine from power and close the water inlet tap before any work on the hose begins.

Step 3 — Access the Drain Hose The drain hose typically runs from the bottom of the machine to a standpipe or sink. Pull the machine away from the wall to access the rear. Have a bucket and towels ready as residual water will be present.

Step 4 — Remove the Faulty Hose Loosen the hose clamp at the pump connection point and at the standpipe end. Slide the hose off both connection points.

Step 5 — Inspect and Address the Blockage (if applicable) If the hose is blocked rather than damaged, clear it using running water and a flexible brush. A blocked drain hose is often filled with accumulated lint, soap scum, and debris.

Step 6 — Install the New or Repaired Hose Fit the new hose, secure the clamps, and ensure the hose is routed correctly — it should loop up to at least 60cm above floor level before descending to the drain to prevent backflow (siphoning) of water.

Step 7 — Test Run a short wash cycle and inspect all connections for leaks.
